Quick answer
Lumecca IPL in Markham at Dr. Monique Mazzuca Aesthetics starts at $325 per session and is performed personally by a licensed physician (MD, CCFP) at 200 Cachet Woods Court, Suite 309, in a 30-minute appointment. Lumecca by InMode is an intense pulsed light (IPL) treatment that targets brown pigment from sun damage and redness from broken capillaries and rosacea. Treated spots typically darken and flake away over about 7 to 10 days and redness fades over the following weeks; most patients need 1 to 3 sessions about a month apart. Downtime is minimal, it works best on lighter, untanned skin, and every spot is assessed by a physician before it is treated. New patients start with the $50 Comprehensive Aesthetic Consultation.
What Lumecca IPL is
Intense pulsed light (IPL) is a light-based treatment, sometimes called a photofacial or photorejuvenation. Unlike a laser, which emits a single wavelength, IPL delivers a flash of broad-spectrum light that is filtered to target specific colours in the skin: the brown of melanin in sun spots and the red of hemoglobin in small blood vessels.
Lumecca® is the IPL platform made by InMode, the same company that makes Morpheus8 and Forma. It is designed to deliver a strong, short pulse of light, which is intended to treat pigment and redness efficiently in a small number of sessions. As with any IPL, the result depends on choosing the right filter and settings for your skin and your concern, which is a medical judgement.
How Lumecca IPL works
IPL works on a principle called selective photothermolysis. The light passes through the skin and is absorbed preferentially by the target colour. In a sun spot, melanin absorbs the energy and heats up; the damaged pigment rises toward the surface, darkens and then flakes away over the following days. In a small blood vessel, hemoglobin absorbs the energy and the heat closes the vessel, which the body then gradually clears.
The surrounding skin absorbs far less light, which is why the treatment can be gentle on the skin around the target. The important exception is skin that has more melanin overall, whether naturally or from a tan. In that skin, the background pigment competes for the light, which raises the risk of burns and of pigment changes. This is the main reason Lumecca is chosen carefully, and why Dr. Mazzuca assesses your skin type before every course.
Lumecca IPL in Markham: what it treats
- Sun spots and age spots (flat brown spots from sun exposure, also called solar lentigines) on the face, neck, chest and hands.
- Freckles and blotchy brown pigment from cumulative sun damage.
- Rosacea and facial redness: the background redness and flushing of rosacea can improve, although rosacea is a long-term condition and IPL controls rather than cures it.
- Broken capillaries (small visible blood vessels, or telangiectasias) on the nose and cheeks.
- Uneven tone and dullness, giving a clearer, more even complexion overall.
- Red marks left after acne may also improve in some patients.
Lumecca is not the right tool for everything brown. Melasma, the hormonal patchy pigment common in women, can flare after heat and light, so Dr. Mazzuca usually recommends other approaches such as medical skincare, a BioRePeel peel or microneedling. Raised or changing spots, and any spot that has not been examined, are never treated with light until they have been assessed; see skin tag and mole removal for spots that need a different approach.
How many Lumecca sessions you need
Some sun spots clear well after a single treatment, but most patients get the best result from a short series. Typical recommendations:
| Goal | Sessions | Spacing |
|---|---|---|
| Sun spots and freckles | 1 to 3 | About 4 weeks apart |
| Redness, rosacea, broken capillaries | 2 to 4, sometimes more | About 4 weeks apart |
| Overall photorejuvenation | 2 to 3 | About 4 weeks apart |
| Maintenance | 1 | Once or twice a year |
These are general ranges. Your plan is confirmed at your consultation and adjusted after the first session based on how your skin responds.
How much Lumecca IPL costs in Markham
Lumecca IPL with Dr. Mazzuca starts at from $325 per session, booked as a 30-minute appointment. As an illustration only, a series of three sessions at the starting price would be from about $975. Treating additional areas such as the neck, chest or hands is quoted before anything is booked. Most patients then maintain their result with one or two sessions a year.
New patients begin with the $50 Comprehensive Aesthetic Consultation (30 minutes), or a $20 virtual consultation if you are outside the area. IPL for sun damage and redness is considered cosmetic and is not covered by OHIP.
Who Lumecca is for, and who should wait
The best candidates have lighter skin that is not tanned, with visible sun spots, freckling, redness or broken capillaries they would like to clear. Lumecca is generally best suited to lighter skin types. Many patients in Markham have medium to deeper skin tones, where IPL carries a higher risk of burns and pigment changes; for those patients Dr. Mazzuca often recommends a safer route to the same goal, such as a medical peel, SkinPen microneedling or prescription skincare.
Timing matters in Ontario. Because tanned skin cannot be treated safely, many patients plan IPL for the fall and winter, and avoid scheduling it just before or after a beach holiday. Dr. Mazzuca will review your history, and treatment is postponed or avoided if you have a tan, recent sun exposure or self-tanner in the area (generally within the past four weeks); are pregnant; take medications that increase light sensitivity, such as some antibiotics, or have taken isotretinoin (Accutane) recently; have a history of melasma; have an active infection, cold sore or rash in the area; have a seizure disorder triggered by light; have a history of keloid scarring; or have tattoos or permanent makeup in the treatment area. If you are prone to cold sores, a preventive antiviral can be prescribed.
What the appointment is like
- Assessment. Dr. Mazzuca examines the spots and redness you want treated, confirms your skin type and that you are not tanned, and confirms the plan and price before starting.
- Preparation. Your skin is cleansed and you are given protective eye shields or goggles, which stay on throughout. A cool layer of gel is applied to the treatment area.
- Treatment. The handpiece is placed on the skin and each pulse produces a bright flash and a quick snap of heat, often compared to a rubber band flick. Numbing is not usually needed. Treatment time for the full face is typically around 15 to 20 minutes.
- Calm and protect. The gel is removed and a soothing product and sunscreen are applied. Brown spots may already look slightly darker, and the skin may be pink.
Results: when you see them and how long they last
Treated brown spots usually darken within hours, sometimes looking like coffee grounds or fine pepper on the skin, then flake off over about 7 to 10 days on the face, and somewhat longer on the chest and hands. Redness and small vessels fade gradually over the following weeks; some small vessels disappear right away. The full result is assessed after the series, typically about a month after the last session.
Spots that clear can stay away for a long time, but IPL does not stop new sun damage from forming, and freckles in particular can return with sun exposure. Rosacea is a chronic condition, so redness tends to return gradually. Most patients keep their result with daily sunscreen and a maintenance session once or twice a year.
Downtime, side effects and risks
Downtime is minimal. Expect redness and mild swelling for a few hours to a day or two, usually more after treatment for redness and broken capillaries. The darkened spots are visible until they flake off, which is mostly a cosmetic inconvenience; makeup can usually be worn the next day, or as advised. Most patients return to work the same day.
Common, temporary effects include redness, mild swelling, warmth, tenderness and darkening or light crusting of treated spots. Less common effects include purple, bruise-like marks after vascular settings, which fade over days to a couple of weeks, and temporary blistering. IPL can also reduce hair growth in the treated area, which matters if you are treating a beard area.
Rare but more serious risks include burns, long-lasting darkening or lightening of the skin, and scarring. These are more likely on tanned or deeper skin, and are reduced by careful skin typing, conservative settings and strict sun avoidance. Eye injury is prevented by wearing protective shields during treatment. Contact the clinic if you develop blisters, increasing pain or any sign of infection.
Aftercare
- For 24 to 48 hours: avoid heat, including hot showers, saunas, hot yoga and strenuous exercise, and limit alcohol, which can increase flushing. A cool compress helps if the skin feels warm.
- Use a gentle cleanser and moisturizer, and pat rather than rub the skin.
- Do not scrub, pick or peel the darkened spots; let them flake off on their own.
- For several days: no retinoids, acids, scrubs or other exfoliants, and no waxing or other treatments in the area.
- Throughout your series and for at least 2 weeks after the last session: avoid direct sun and tanning, and use a broad-spectrum sunscreen SPF 30 or higher every day.
- Before each session: arrive untanned, without self-tanner, and follow any advice about pausing retinoids or other products beforehand.
Lumecca vs peels, microneedling and Morpheus8
| Lumecca IPL | BioRePeel chemical peel | SkinPen microneedling | Morpheus8 | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | Sun spots, freckles, redness, broken capillaries | Tone, clarity, congestion, quick refresh | Texture, pores, acne scars, glow | Laxity, acne scars, texture, firmness |
| Energy | Light | Chemical | Mechanical only | Needles plus radiofrequency heat |
| Downtime | Darkened spots flake for about a week | Minimal, light flaking | 1 to 3 days pink | About 2 to 5 days |
| Deeper skin tones | Caution; not for tanned skin | Good | Excellent | Good with adjusted settings |
| Starting price | $325 | $250 | $350 | $733 |
The short version: if your concern is distinct brown spots or redness on lighter skin, Lumecca is usually the most direct tool. If your concern is overall dullness, congestion or uneven tone, or your skin is medium to deep, a peel or SkinPen is often safer. If texture or firmness matter more than colour, consider Morpheus8. Many plans combine Lumecca for colour with microneedling or Morpheus8 for texture, on separate visits.
Why patients choose a physician
At this clinic the person assessing you and the person treating you are the same person, and that person is a licensed physician. Dr. Mazzuca is an MD with CCFP certification in family medicine and additional training in cosmetic medicine, facial anatomy, women's health, and longevity medicine. Treatment is not delegated.
Her stated approach is to emphasise "subtle, elegant results that refresh rather than transform, using the least invasive treatments necessary to achieve safe, natural, and lasting outcomes."
With light-based treatment, diagnosis comes first. Not every brown spot is a harmless sun spot, and treating an unrecognized skin cancer with light can lighten it without removing it, delaying diagnosis. Dr. Mazzuca examines every spot before it is treated and refers anything suspicious for further assessment. As a physician she can also tell melasma from sun damage, recognize rosacea and prescribe medical treatment for it alongside IPL, and choose settings that respect your skin type.

Does Lumecca IPL hurt?
Most patients describe each pulse as a quick snap of heat, like a rubber band flick, with a bright flash. A cool gel is used and numbing is not usually needed. Areas with more pigment or redness tend to feel a little stronger.
How many Lumecca sessions do I need, and how long do results last?
Most patients have 1 to 3 sessions about four weeks apart, sometimes more for redness. Each session starts at from $325, so as an illustration a series of three starts from about $975. Cleared spots can stay away for a long time, but new sun damage and rosacea redness can return, so most patients maintain with one or two sessions a year and daily sunscreen.
Will my spots look worse before they look better?
Yes, briefly. Treated brown spots usually darken within hours and look like coffee grounds on the skin, then flake off over about 7 to 10 days on the face. This is the expected response, not a side effect. Plan important events at least two weeks after treatment.
Is Lumecca IPL safe for darker skin?
IPL carries a higher risk of burns and pigment changes in medium to deeper skin tones and in any tanned skin, because the background pigment absorbs the light. Dr. Mazzuca assesses your skin type first and, if IPL is not the safest choice, recommends alternatives such as a medical peel, SkinPen microneedling or prescription skincare.
Can Lumecca treat melasma?
Usually not as a first choice. Melasma can flare after heat and light, so Dr. Mazzuca generally treats it with medical skincare, gentle peels or microneedling instead, and uses IPL only for sun spots and redness.
When is the best time of year for IPL?
Fall and winter are popular in Ontario, because sun exposure is lowest and tanned skin cannot be treated safely. Avoid booking just before or after a sunny holiday, and use daily sunscreen throughout your series.
