Quick answer
Lip filler in Markham at Dr. Monique Mazzuca Aesthetics starts from $500, is injected personally by a licensed physician (MD, CCFP) at 200 Cachet Woods Court, Suite 309, and is booked as a 45-minute appointment. Hyaluronic acid filler adds soft volume, defines the lip border and evens out asymmetry. Results are visible right away and settle over about two weeks as swelling fades, and most lip results last roughly 6 to 12 months. Expect a few days of swelling and possibly a bruise. Hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved if needed. New patients start with a $50 consultation.
What lip filler is
Lip filler is an injection of hyaluronic acid (HA) gel into and around the lips. Hyaluronic acid is a sugar molecule that occurs naturally in the skin, where it binds water and helps keep tissue plump and hydrated. The hyaluronic acid in filler is cross-linked, meaning its molecules are bonded into a gel, so it lasts for months rather than days before the body gradually breaks it down.
Hyaluronic acid fillers come in different textures. Softer, more flexible gels suit the lips because they need to move naturally when you speak, smile and eat; firmer gels are reserved for structural areas such as the chin and cheeks. Most fillers used today also contain a small amount of lidocaine, a local anaesthetic, to make treatment more comfortable. Dr. Mazzuca chooses the product for each patient at the assessment, based on your lip anatomy and the result you are hoping for.
Because it is hyaluronic acid, lip filler is reversible. An enzyme called hyaluronidase can dissolve it if a result is not right or if a complication occurs. Dr. Mazzuca also offers filler dissolving for patients who have had lip filler elsewhere that has migrated or no longer suits them.
How lip filler works
Lips differ from person to person and change with age. Over time they can lose volume, the border of the lip (the vermilion border) can become less distinct, the corners can turn down, and fine vertical lines can appear above the upper lip. Some people simply have naturally thin lips, or one side that is fuller than the other.
Filler works by placing small amounts of gel exactly where structure or volume is missing: along the border to define the shape, into the body of the lip for fullness, at the Cupid's bow for definition, at the corners for support, and sometimes in the philtral columns, the two ridges between the nose and the upper lip. Because hyaluronic acid attracts water, lips often look and feel more hydrated as well as fuller. The amount used is small, typically somewhere between 0.5 and 1 mL in a session, and it varies with your anatomy and goals.
The skill is in proportion rather than volume. A natural-looking result usually keeps the lower lip slightly fuller than the upper lip and stays in balance with the nose, chin and teeth. Dr. Mazzuca builds gradually, and for first-time patients she would rather add a little more at a later visit than place too much on day one.
Lip filler in Markham: what it treats
Lip filler can help with:
- Thin lips, or lips that have lost volume with age.
- A poorly defined border, where the edge of the lip has softened and lipstick tends to bleed.
- Asymmetry between the upper and lower lip or between the left and right sides.
- A flat Cupid's bow or a lack of shape at the centre of the upper lip.
- Downturned corners, sometimes combined with a small dose of Botox to relax the muscle that pulls the corners down.
- Dry-looking lips and fine lip lines, where a soft, hydrating product can improve texture.
Lip filler is not a route to an overfilled look. Dr. Mazzuca's aim is lips that look like yours on a good day: balanced, hydrated and in proportion with the rest of the face. If a request would look out of proportion, she will say so.
Who lip filler suits, and who should wait
Good candidates are healthy adults who want more definition, better balance or a gentle restoration of volume, and who are comfortable with a gradual, natural result. First-time patients often do best with a conservative amount, which can be built on later.
Dr. Mazzuca will review your medical history and may recommend waiting, or a different approach, if you:
- are pregnant or breastfeeding;
- have an active cold sore, pimple or skin infection on or around the mouth (if you get cold sores often, tell her at your consultation, as she may discuss preventive antiviral medication);
- have had dental work recently or have an appointment coming up, as a gap of about two weeks either side is commonly advised;
- have a known allergy to hyaluronic acid filler or lidocaine;
- have a bleeding disorder or take blood thinners, or have an autoimmune or other condition that affects healing;
- have had permanent lip implants or a filler of unknown type in the lips;
- have an important event in the next two weeks, since swelling or a bruise needs time to settle.
Lip filler is for adults. Please bring a list of your medications and supplements to the consultation.
What the appointment is like
- Consultation and assessment. Dr. Mazzuca looks at your lips at rest and in motion, notes any asymmetry, and talks through the shape you would like. She explains what she recommends, how much product it is likely to need and what it will cost before anything is injected.
- Numbing. A topical anaesthetic is applied for comfort, and the filler itself usually contains lidocaine, so the area becomes numb as treatment progresses.
- Injection. Small amounts of filler are placed with a fine needle or a blunt cannula. Dr. Mazzuca checks symmetry as she goes and you can see the result in a mirror. The injecting itself typically takes 15 to 20 minutes.
- Aftercare. A cool pack is applied and you leave with written instructions. A review at about two weeks can be arranged to check the settled result.
The visit is booked for 45 minutes. Most patients return to work or errands the same day, although lips will look swollen at first.
Results: when you see them and how long they last
You will see a difference immediately, but the first few days are not the final result. Swelling usually peaks in the first 24 to 48 hours, can look uneven, and is often more noticeable on waking. Most of it settles within a few days, and lips usually look and feel natural by about two weeks, which is when the result should be judged.
Lip filler typically lasts about 6 to 12 months. Longevity varies with the product, the amount placed, your metabolism and how much your lips move, and some patients find it lasts longer. The filler fades gradually rather than disappearing suddenly, and repeat treatments often need less product because some structure remains.
Downtime, side effects and risks
Common and temporary: swelling, tenderness, redness at the injection points and bruising, which can take 5 to 10 days to fade. Small bumps are common in the first week or two and usually soften as the filler settles.
Less common: lumps that persist, asymmetry, filler migrating above the lip border over time (more likely with large volumes or repeated overfilling), a bluish tint if filler sits too close to the surface, a cold sore outbreak triggered by the injections, infection, and delayed swelling or nodules that can appear weeks or months later. Most of these can be treated, and hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved if needed.
Rare but serious: vascular occlusion, where filler blocks or compresses a blood vessel. The lips have arteries running through them, so this risk is real even though it is uncommon. Warning signs are sudden or severe pain, skin that turns white, dusky or mottled, and colour changes that spread beyond the injection points. It is a medical emergency, treated promptly with hyaluronidase to dissolve the filler and restore blood flow. Serious allergic reactions are very rare. If you notice any of these signs after treatment, contact the clinic immediately, or go to the nearest emergency department if the clinic is closed.
Aftercare: the first 24 to 48 hours
- Apply a cool pack wrapped in a cloth for 10 minutes at a time during the first day to reduce swelling.
- Avoid pressing, massaging or putting firm pressure on the lips (including firm kissing) for 24 hours unless Dr. Mazzuca has asked you to.
- Avoid lipstick and lip products on the injection points until the next day, and be careful with hot drinks until the numbness wears off.
- Skip strenuous exercise, saunas, hot yoga and alcohol for 24 to 48 hours, as they can increase swelling and bruising.
- Sleep on your back with your head slightly raised for the first night or two.
- Avoid dental work, facials and other treatments around the mouth for two weeks.
- Contact the clinic if pain increases rather than settles, if the skin changes colour, or if you develop blisters or a fever.
To reduce the chance of bruising, avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, vitamin E, ginkgo and alcohol for a few days beforehand, unless a physician has prescribed them.
Lip filler vs lip flip and other options
| Lip filler | Lip flip (Botox) | |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | Adds volume, shape and definition with hyaluronic acid | Relaxes the muscle around the mouth so the upper lip rolls slightly outward |
| Best for | Thin or asymmetric lips, a soft border, lost volume | A subtle change, or an upper lip that disappears when you smile |
| Onset | Immediate, settles over about 2 weeks | A few days |
| Lasts | About 6 to 12 months | Usually a shorter time, often a few months |
| Reversible | Yes, with hyaluronidase | Wears off on its own |
| Cost | From $500 | $10 per unit |
The two are often combined: a lip flip for the way the lip moves and a small amount of filler for shape. Lip balance also depends on the rest of the face, so some patients get a more harmonious result from dermal filler in the chin or cheeks alongside a conservative lip treatment. If earlier filler from another clinic has migrated or looks heavy, dissolving it first and starting fresh is often the better plan. A surgical lip lift, which shortens the space between the nose and the upper lip, is a permanent option performed by a plastic surgeon and is not offered at this clinic.
Why patients choose a physician
At this clinic the person assessing you and the person treating you are the same person, and that person is a licensed physician. Dr. Mazzuca is an MD with CCFP certification in family medicine and additional training in cosmetic medicine, facial anatomy, women's health, and longevity medicine. Treatment is not delegated.
Her stated approach is to emphasise "subtle, elegant results that refresh rather than transform, using the least invasive treatments necessary to achieve safe, natural, and lasting outcomes."
Lip treatment looks simple but it depends on anatomy. The arteries that supply the lips run within the lip itself, and placement depth, product choice and injection technique all affect both the result and the safety of the treatment. As a physician, Dr. Mazzuca assesses you, performs the treatment and manages any concern herself, including dissolving filler with hyaluronidase if it is ever needed. In Ontario, injectables can legally be delegated to nurses and other staff; at this clinic they are not.

Lip filler starts from $500. Your final cost depends on how much product your plan needs, and it is confirmed at your assessment before anything is injected. As a simple illustration, a patient who has one treatment at the starting price each year spends about $500 a year, or roughly $42 a month; the real figure depends on your plan and how long your result lasts. Cosmetic lip filler is not covered by OHIP.

Does lip filler hurt?
The lips are sensitive, but most patients find it very manageable. A topical numbing cream is applied first and the filler usually contains lidocaine, a local anaesthetic, so the area becomes numb during treatment. Most people describe pressure and brief pinches rather than pain.
How long does lip filler last?
Typically about 6 to 12 months. It varies with the product, the amount placed, your metabolism and how much your lips move. The result fades gradually, and repeat treatments often need less product.
How much swelling should I expect, and when should I book before an event?
Swelling usually peaks in the first 24 to 48 hours and settles over a few days, with the final result visible at about two weeks. Bruising, if it happens, can take 5 to 10 days to fade. Book at least two weeks before an important event.
Will my lips look overdone?
Not with a conservative plan. Dr. Mazzuca aims for lips that look like yours on a good day, in proportion with the rest of your face. First-time patients often start with a modest amount, and more can be added later if you want it.
Can lip filler be dissolved?
Yes. Hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase. This is used to correct a result you are unhappy with, to treat migrated filler, and urgently in the rare event of a vascular complication. See the filler dissolving page.
What is the difference between a lip flip and lip filler?
A lip flip uses a few units of Botox to relax the muscle around the mouth so the upper lip rolls slightly outward. It adds no volume and wears off in a few months. Lip filler adds volume, shape and definition and typically lasts 6 to 12 months. They are often combined.
