Morpheus8 or SkinPen? Choosing the Right Kind of Microneedling

They share a name and a mechanism, and they are used for different problems. Choosing between them starts with what you are actually trying to fix.

A collagen-stimulating device treatment in progress at the Markham clinic

Both treatments create controlled micro-injuries in the skin so that it responds by producing new collagen and elastin. That shared principle is why they are confused with one another. The difference is depth, energy, and therefore what they can change.

SkinPen: the surface and just below

SkinPen Precision is a medical microneedling device that creates thousands of fine channels in the upper layers of the skin. It is a treatment for skin quality: fine lines, enlarged pores, uneven texture, mild acne scarring, dullness, and the crepey skin that develops on the cheeks and around the eyes. It also improves the penetration of serums applied afterwards.

What it does not do is tighten. It has no meaningful effect on jowls, laxity along the jaw, or loose skin under the chin, because it does not reach the deeper tissue where those problems live.

Downtime is one to three days of redness resembling a sunburn, with some dryness and light flaking. Most patients have it on a Thursday or Friday. A course is three to six sessions, four to six weeks apart, and results build over three to six months as the collagen matures. At the clinic it is $350 per session.

Morpheus8: the deeper layer

Morpheus8 uses fine needles that also deliver radiofrequency energy at adjustable depths, into the dermis and the fat layer beneath it. The heat contracts existing collagen fibres immediately and stimulates new collagen more aggressively than needling alone. It also remodels superficial fat, which is why it can sharpen a jawline or reduce fullness under the chin.

It is the appropriate choice for mild to moderate skin laxity, early jowls, deeper acne scarring, and texture on the neck and body. It is a more significant treatment: the appointment is longer, topical anaesthetic is essential, and downtime is three to five days of redness and swelling with small grid marks that fade over a week. A course is usually three sessions, four to six weeks apart, at $733 per session, with results developing over three to six months.

What neither will do

Neither device replaces a facelift. Significant laxity, where skin can be gathered in folds between your fingers, is surgical. Neither treats pigmentation directly; sun spots and melasma are a job for IPL, peels and topical agents. And neither is a substitute for a retinoid and daily sunscreen, which protect the collagen you are paying to build.

How I decide

I look at whether your concern is on the surface or beneath it. If you pinch your cheek and the skin springs back, but the texture is rough or the pores are visible, SkinPen. If the skin is slower to return, the jawline is softening, or the concern is the neck, Morpheus8. Many patients in their forties and fifties benefit from Morpheus8 for structure followed by SkinPen for surface, but that is a plan built at a consultation, not a package bought online.

Common questions

What is the difference between Morpheus8 and microneedling?

SkinPen microneedling treats the upper layers of the skin and improves texture, pores and fine lines. Morpheus8 adds radiofrequency energy delivered at deeper, adjustable depths, so it can also tighten skin and remodel superficial fat. Morpheus8 is for laxity; SkinPen is for surface quality.

Which is better for acne scars, Morpheus8 or SkinPen?

Mild, shallow scarring responds well to a SkinPen series. Deeper, pitted scarring generally responds better to Morpheus8 because it reaches and remodels deeper tissue.

How much downtime does Morpheus8 have?

Typically three to five days of redness and swelling, with fine grid marks that fade over about a week. SkinPen has one to three days of sunburn-like redness.

How many Morpheus8 sessions do I need?

Usually three, spaced four to six weeks apart, with results developing over three to six months as new collagen forms.

How much do Morpheus8 and SkinPen cost in Markham?

At the clinic, SkinPen is $350 per session and Morpheus8 is $733 per session. A course is planned at your consultation based on what you are treating.
